Canoeing Expectations
Counselors need to be patient during Canoeing.
Sometimes, the campers will argue over who will paddle.
During this time it is important to be patient and fair to the
campers who had not paddled before and those who have.
Keeping a running list of who has paddled and who hasn’t
can help when the group becomes unruly. The Lifeguard
is there as a safety precaution and is merely there to help
the counselor during boating. Counselors should never
treat the lifeguard as a specialist. The bulk of the
responsibility of the management and organization of the
group still lies on the counselor. So the counselor should
settle disputes and make boating groups before hand, so
that the lifeguard is not the one to deal with it. Counselors
maintain order in the group at all times during boating and
need to prevent rough housing. Another quality of a good
counselor during canoeing is creativity. Simply going
around to Dead Man’s Dock and Boat can become trite the
second or third time boating. A good counselor could
initiate a scavenger hunt, play a game, or with the younger
kids, sing songs or tell non-scary stories about the water.
The best of the best are able to make canoeing exciting
even for the camper who has been at Harrington for more
than 1-2 years!
