Counselor Expectations
Counselors have the toughest jobs at Camp Harrington.
As a camp counselor not only are you in charge of a group
of 8-15 children, but you are also responsible for helping
our Jr. Counselors grow and develop into the next
generation of staff at camp. Counselors routinely check in
at 8:45am and are to go to their mailbox and get any new
mail and their attendance sheet for the day. After checking
mail, counselors proceed to the pavillion to help with the
children that have arrived prior to 8:45 and are waiting for
the buses to arrive. Counselors main duties are behavior
management with their group. Keeping the children safe
and acting appropriately is job #1. Camp Harrington has a
behavior management system that staff follow and includes
programs like the character development sticker chart,
character development awards, the mayonaise jar, caught
being good coins, smile balls, etc. Job #2 is to KNOW all
the kids in your group and to be actively involved with them
where ever they go. Times spent at specialists is not
relaxation time but rather a time to really get to know the
kids in your groups. Along with daily supervision of your
group there are a variety of other jobs counselors are
asked to do. Counselor Lead Classes happen 2 times a
summer and each counselor is asked to submit 2 lesson
plans prior to the summer for the Director of Camp
Programming to choose from in creating these special
days. Counselors are also responsible for helping with
theme weeks by working with their campers to create any
special projects needed at closing. Speaking of closing,
each session camp finishes it's day with a camp closing.
Counselors are expected to take time with their group to
create a play, song, dance, or other skit to show off in front
of the entire camp at the end of a day.
