Low Ropes/Special Activity Expectations
Low ropes elements may seem easy, but they require
teamwork and cooperation from the campers.  This means
that counselors need to initiate teamwork amongst the
campers and allow for the special activities director (SAD)
to conduct the activity successfully. Counselors must arrive
on time so that the SAD can begin the activity as soon as
they can.  Counselors must make sure that the SAD is
helped in anyway the need, so counselors should always
ask if there is anything that he/she can do to assist them.
Counselor should make sure that the campers are fully
cooperating with the specialist and each other so that the
element runs smoothly. Helping campers work together to
"solve" the low ropes element is essential, but only hint or
suggest ideas after the kids have had some time to work by
themselves.

Special Activity (SA) is a time that can make campers a bit
nervous because they do not necessarily know what is
planned for them.  Knowing this, counselors need to go into
SA with their kids excited and ready to try anything.  In past
years, SA has included new games in the field, baking, a
special craft (tie dying, paper hats, warm fuzzies, puppets,
etc.), scavenger hunts, adn much much more.  The SAD
will have spent a significant ammount of time planning your
SA and you are their right hand and moral support to
ensure that the kids get excited for this specialist time.
Engage yourself with the activity and support the SAD with
the children who do not seem as interested and help work
with those kids to get them actively involved.
