Nature Expectations
Counselors at Nature are expected to be acttively
involved. Nature is a relaxed, educational, but fun time for
kids. However, sometimes Nature can be scheduled in the
afternoon when the kids are wired. It is best to fully
participate in all of the activities that the nature director
facilitates, because you are setting a good example for the
campers to emulate. In the beginning of Nature, you
should ask the specialist if there is anything that you can
do to help. Sometimes the activities can include nature
walks, frog hunts, or a scavenger hunt, in these cases,
close attention needs to be paid to the campers and make
sure that they all stick together with the group. In any
event, Nature is usually conducted in heavily insect ridden
areas, it is best to make sure that all campers have
bugspray on before beginning the activity. Making sure the
campers behave themselves during a lesson is also
important. Campers do not benefit from the lesson from the
specialist if they are distracted – managing the campers'
behavior is an important task of the counselors. If taking a
nature walk, the counselor should walk in the back of the
group, as the instructor walks in front. This way, campers
are less likely to become separated from the group and
stay on task.
