Rainy Day Expectations
A rainy day is a day at camp in which the director can really
see the abilities and talents of the staff that he has hired.
Rainy days are FUN DAYS at camp and the counselors are
central to that idea.  Without the counselors’ vivacity, the
day would be a wash.  Counselors need to remain
energetic and excited about the day if it is raining.  A good
counselor is ready to play and participate with the campers
during any group activity so the excitement of campers
remains high.  Counselors should always be ready to be
creative on rainy days, as the activities will lose momentum
fast because the campers are inside, so new games should
be ready to be played at all times and the campers should
always be occupied and excited about each new game.
Counselors will need to be patient with the campers, as
campers will become restless and rambunctious.
Counselors will also need to be patient with the director as
well, Rainy Days can be stressful in the camp office and
compliance and patience with the director and assistant
director makes the day run more smoothly.  Also good
counselors work together on rainy days.  Teamwork
between counselors and open communication can create
exciting group activities that can make the day go more
smoothly for the campers and keep them occupied.  While
participating in activities at the pavilion (with the ropes
staff), the a&c building (with the creative arts director), the
tents (with the nature and special activity staff), the
boathouse (with the h20 staff), and the lodge (with the
Leaders) it is a time to play a support role and engage your
children with the activity planned by these specialists.  This
is NOT a time to relax and place the burden of work
completely on the specialists.  Specialists too will need a
break from leading their activities and counselors should be
able to read the signs that a specialist may be tired and
staff should them step right in and take over!
